Send C of E First School installed a new solar electric generating system in summer 2010. Cati Smith, GBC’s Community Climate Change Officer, reported as below on the installation:
•         Send Church of England First School was one of 13 local schools which opted for free energy saving audits, funded by Guildford Borough Council and Allianz. The reports provided each school with energy saving recommendations that can be used in their long-term development plan. Suggestions ranged from how to make their buildings more energy efficient to what type of renewable technology would be most appropriate for each school. Send C of E First School has since implemented the energy saving recommendations and were keen to focus on installing renewable technologies.
•         For Send C of E First School the following renewable technologies were identified as most suitable for the school: solar photovoltaic and ground source heat pumps.
•         The School decided that Solar PV would be most favourable given the roof space and that it would help reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions.  A display unit showing how much electricity the solar pv panels are generating will be visible to pupils, staff and visitors who will have a constant reminder of this environmentally-friendly technology..
•         Following a year and half of raising funds to install an 8.51kWp solar photovoltaic system, all the funds were in place and installation was carried out during late July 2010 by a local microgeneration certified company (based in Aldershot).
The funding came from the following sources:
  Low Carbon Buildings Programme (Department of Energy and Climate Change)
  Johnson Wax Ltd Charitable trust
  Send C of E First School PTA
  Rake Community Fund and Community Foundation for Surrey
  Surrey County Council’s Local Committee Guildford
  Guildford Environmental Forum
  Guildford Borough Council’s Greening the Borough Grant

The school installed 46 Mitsubishi south facing solar pv panels on the flat roof above the hall and classroom area. It is expected to generate 6,76 MWh annually and has an estimated annual CO2 saving of 3,83 tonnes. Guildford Borough Council’s climate change team worked closely with the school to help raise the funds for the project. As the school will be benefitting from a government grant they will not be able to claim the renewable electricity microgeneration feed in tariffs. Nonetheless, this installation should still help the school reduce its fuel bills and carbon emissions.
